Sfaturi pentru sclavii creştini
1 Cei care se află sub jugul sclaviei să îi considere pe stăpânii lor vrednici de toată cinstea, pentru ca Numele lui Dumnezeu şi învăţătura să nu fie defăimate. 2 Iar cei care au stăpâni credincioşi să nu îi dispreţuiască deoarece sunt fraţi; dimpotrivă, cu atât mai mult să îi slujească, fiindcă sunt credincioşi şi iubiţi, dedicaţi faptelor bune. Aşa să-i înveţi şi să-i îndemni.
Doctrinele false şi adevărata bogăţie
3 Dacă cineva învaţă altceva şi nu se ţine de cuvintele sănătoase ale Domnului nostru Iisus Hristos şi de învăţătura potrivită cu evlavia, 4 acela este plin de mândrie şi nu înţelege nimic, ci suferă de patima disputelor şi a contrazicerilor. Din acestea vin: invidia, cearta, blasfemiile, bănuielile rele 5 şi certurile nesfârşite ale oamenilor stricaţi la minte şi lipsiţi de adevăr, care văd în credinţă un mijloc de câştig. 6 Într-adevăr, credinţa este un mare câştig pentru cel ce se mulţumeşte cu ceea ce are. 7 Pentru că noi nu am adus nimic în lume, aşa încât nu putem lua nimic din ea. 8 Dacă avem hrană şi îmbrăcăminte, să ne mulţumim cu ele! 9 Însă cei care vor să se îmbogăţească vor cădea în ispită şi în cursă şi în tot felul de pofte nebuneşti şi vătămătoare, care-i cufundă pe oameni în ruină şi pierzare. 10 Fiindcă iubirea de bani este rădăcina tuturor relelor şi cei care tânjesc după arginţi s-au rătăcit de la credinţă şi şi-au atras multe suferinţe.
Lupta cea bună a credinţei
11 Dar tu, om al lui Dumnezeu, fereşte-te de aceste lucruri şi urmează dreptatea, evlavia, credinţa, iubirea, răbdarea şi blândeţea. 12 Du lupta cea bună a credinţei, cucereşte viaţa veşnică la care ai fost chemat şi pentru care ai dat mărturie bună înaintea multor martori. 13 Înaintea lui Dumnezeu, care dă viaţă tuturor, şi înaintea lui Hristos Iisus, care a dat mărturia cea bună înaintea lui Ponţiu Pilat, te îndemn 14 să păzeşti porunca fără pată şi fără vină, până la arătarea Domnului nostru Iisus Hristos, 15 pe care, la vremea potrivită, o va arăta fericitul şi unicul Stăpânitor, Împăratul împăraţilor şi Domnul domnilor, 16 Singurul care are nemurirea şi locuieşte în lumina de nepătruns, pe care nici un om nu L-a văzut şi nici nu poate să-L vadă. A Lui să fie cinstea şi stăpânirea veşnică. Amin!
Sfaturi pentru cei bogaţi
17 Porunceşte-le celor bogaţi în veacul de acum să nu se mândrească şi să nu se încreadă în bogăţiile nesigure, ci în Dumnezeu care ne dăruieşte toate lucrurile din belşug ca să ne bucurăm de ele. 18 Porunceşte-le să facă binele, să se îmbogăţească în fapte bune, să fie darnici, să împartă cu ceilalţi. 19 În felul acesta îşi vor aduna o comoară, o temelie bună pentru veacul viitor, ca într-adevăr să dobândească viaţa.
Încheiere
20 O, Timotei, păzeşte comoara care ţi-a fost încredinţată şi fereşte-te de vorbăria goală şi lumească şi de împotrivirile aşa-zisei cunoaşteri, 21 pe care unii o predică, îndepărtându-se de la credinţă. Harul să fie cu voi!
1 Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. 2 And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them , because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.
3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; 4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, 5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. 9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. 13 I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession; 14 That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: 15 Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; 16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen. 17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; 18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; 19 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life. 20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: 21 Which some professing have erred concerning the faith.
