1 Iacov, robul lui Dumnezeu şi al Domnului Iisus Hristos, către cele douăsprezece seminţii răspândite în lume: Bucuraţi-vă!
Încurajare la credinţă şi înţelepciune
2 Să consideraţi drept o mare bucurie, fraţii mei, când vin peste voi diferite încercări, 3 ştiind că din încercarea credinţei voastre se naşte răbdarea, 4 iar răbdarea trebuie să ajungă la desăvârşire în voi, ca să fiţi desăvârşiţi şi întregi, fără a vă lipsi ceva. 5 Dacă cineva dintre voi este lipsit de înţelepciune, să o ceară de la Dumnezeu, cel ce dă tuturor cu dărnicie, fără să reproşeze ceva, şi i se va da. 6 Dar să ceară cu credinţă, fără a se îndoi de nimic, pentru că cel care se îndoieşte este asemenea valului mării, clătinat de vânt şi tras încoace şi încolo. 7 Omul acela să nu creadă că va primi ceva de la Domnul, 8 căci este om cu sufletul împărţit, nestatornic în toate căile lui.
Săracii şi bogaţii
9 Fratele sărac să se laude cu înălţimea la care îl duce Dumnezeu, 10 iar cel bogat să se laude cu nimicnicia lui, pentru că va trece ca floarea ierbii. 11 Căci a răsărit soarele cu văpaia lui şi a uscat iarba şi floarea ei a căzut şi podoaba feţei ei a pierit; tot aşa se va veşteji şi bogatul în drumurile sale.
Despre încercări
12 Fericit este omul care îndură ispita, pentru că, fiind încercat, va primi cununa vieţii pe care a făgăduit-o Dumnezeu celor ce-L iubesc. 13 Nimeni, atunci când este ispitit, să nu zică: „Sunt ispitit de Dumnezeu!” fiindcă Dumnezeu nu este ispitit de cele rele şi El Însuşi nu ispiteşte pe nimeni; 14 ci fiecare se ispiteşte singur, fiind târât şi momit chiar de pofta sa; 15 apoi pofta, după ce a zămislit, naşte păcatul, iar păcatul, după ce e înfăptuit, aduce pe lume moarte.
16 Nu vă înşelaţi, fraţii mei iubiţi! 17 Toată dăruirea cea bună şi orice dar desăvârşit sunt de sus şi se coboară de la Părintele luminilor, în care nu este schimbare, nici măcar umbră de schimbare. 18 El, după voia Sa, ne-a născut prin cuvântul adevărului ca să fim primul rod al făpturilor Lui.
Auzirea şi împlinirea cuvântului
19 Înţelegeţi, iubiţii mei fraţi: orice om să fie gata să asculte şi să nu se grăbească să vorbească sau să se mânie, 20 pentru că mânia omului nu înfăptuieşte dreptatea lui Dumnezeu. 21 De-aceea, lăsând deoparte orice murdărie şi revărsare a răutăţii, primiţi cu blândeţe cuvântul sădit în voi, care are putere să vă mântuiască sufletele. 22 Împliniţi cuvântul, nu fiţi numai ascultători ai lui, înşelându-vă singuri. 23 Căci dacă cineva este ascultător al cuvântului şi nu-l împlineşte, se aseamănă omului care îşi priveşte chipul în oglindă; 24 s-a privit, a plecat şi-ndată a uitat cum era. 25 Dar cine a privit spre legea desăvârşită a libertăţii şi a stăruit în ea, făcându-se nu numai un ascultător care uită, ci un împlinitor al ei cu fapta, acesta va fi fericit în ceea ce va face. 26 Dacă i se pare cuiva că este evlavios, dar nu-şi înfrânează limba, îşi înşeală inima, evlavia lui este zadarnică. 27 Evlavia curată şi neîntinată înaintea lui Dumnezeu, Tatăl nostru, este aceasta: să ai grijă de orfani şi de văduve în necazul lor şi să te păzeşti nepătat de lume.

2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3 Knowing this , that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. 5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. 8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. 9 Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted: 10 But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. 11 For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways. 12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. 13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: 14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. 16 Do not err, my beloved brethren. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. 18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: 20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. 21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. 23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: 24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. 25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein , he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. 26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain. 27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
