Trădarea şi arestarea lui Iisus
1 Zicând acestea, Iisus a ieşit cu ucenicii Săi, dincolo de pârâul Chedron, unde era o grădină, în care au intrat El şi ucenicii Săi. 2 Şi Iuda, trădătorul, ştia locul, pentru că Iisus şi ucenicii Lui se adunaseră acolo adesea. 3 Iuda, luând o trupă de soldaţi şi slujitori de la marii preoţi şi de la farisei, a venit acolo cu felinare, făclii şi arme. 4 Iar Iisus, ştiind toate câte aveau să vină asupra sa, a ieşit şi le-a zis: „Pe cine căutaţi?” 5 I-au răspuns: „Pe Iisus Nazarineanul.” El le-a zis: „Eu sunt.” Iar Iuda, trădătorul, era şi el cu ei. 6 Atunci când le-a spus: „Eu sunt”, ei s-au dat înapoi şi au căzut la pământ. 7 Aşadar i-a întrebat din nou: „Pe cine căutaţi?” Iar ei au spus: „Pe Iisus Nazarineanul.” 8 Iisus le-a răspuns: „V-am spus că Eu sunt. Deci, dacă Mă căutaţi pe Mine, lăsaţi-i pe aceştia să plece!” 9 Ca să se împlinească cuvântul pe care îl spusese: „Nu am pierdut pe nici unul dintre cei pe care Mi i-ai dat.” 10 Atunci Simon Petru, având o sabie, a tras-o şi l-a lovit pe slujitorul marelui preot şi i-a tăiat urechea dreaptă; numele slujitorului era Malhus. 11 Iisus i-a zis lui Petru: „Pune-ţi sabia în teacă! Oare nu voi bea paharul pe care Mi l-a dat Tatăl?”
Iisus înaintea marelui preot
12 Atunci trupa de soldaţi, comandantul şi slujitorii iudeilor L-au prins pe Iisus şi L-au legat. 13 L-au dus întâi la Anna, căci era socrul lui Caiafa, care era mare preot în anul acela. 14 Caiafa era acela care îi sfătuise pe iudei că este mai de folos să moară un singur om pentru popor.
15 În urma lui Iisus mergeau Simon Petru şi un alt ucenic. Iar ucenicul acela era un cunoscut de-al marelui preot şi a intrat împreună cu Iisus în curtea marelui preot. 16 Iar Petru stătea lângă poartă, afară. Celălalt ucenic, care era un cunoscut al marelui preot, a ieşit şi a vorbit cu portăreasa şi l-a băgat pe Petru înăuntru. 17 Slujnica portăreasă i-a zis lui Petru: „Nu cumva eşti şi tu dintre ucenicii omului acestuia?” El a spus: „Nu sunt.” 18 Slujitorii şi gărzile făcuseră un foc, pentru că era frig, şi stăteau şi se încălzeau. Era şi Petru cu ei, stând şi încălzindu-se. 19 Atunci marele preot L-a întrebat pe Iisus despre ucenicii şi învăţătura Lui. 20 Iisus i-a răspuns: „Eu am vorbit lumii pe faţă. Întotdeauna am învăţat în sinagogă şi în Templu, unde se adună toţi iudeii, şi nu am vorbit nimic pe ascuns. 21 De ce Mă întrebi? Întreabă-i pe cei care au auzit ce le-am vorbit. Iată, aceştia ştiu ce am spus Eu.” 22 Şi, când a spus acestea, unul din gardă, care era de faţă, I-a dat o palmă lui Iisus, şi I-a zis: „Aşa Îi răspunzi Tu marelui preot?” 23 Iisus i-a răspuns: „Dacă am vorbit rău, arată-mi ce este rău, iar dacă am vorbit bine, de ce Mă loveşti?” 24 Atunci Anna L-a trimis legat la Caiafa, marele preot.
25 Iar Simon Petru stătea şi se încălzea. I-au spus aşadar: „Nu cumva eşti şi tu dintre ucenicii Lui?” El a tăgăduit şi a zis: „Nu sunt!” 26 Unul dintre slujitorii marelui preot, rudă cu cel căruia îi tăiase Petru urechea, i-a spus: „Nu te-am văzut oare în grădină cu El?” 27 Petru a tăgăduit şi îndată a cântat cocoşul.
Iisus înaintea lui Pilat
28 L-au adus pe Iisus de la Caiafa la pretoriu. Era dimineaţă. Ei nu au intrat în pretoriu, ca să nu se pângărească şi să poată mânca Paştele. 29 Pilat a ieşit deci afară la ei şi le-a zis: „Ce învinuire aduceţi împotriva acestui om?” 30 Ei i-au răspuns: „Dacă nu ar fi fost un răufăcător, nu L-am fi dat pe mâna ta.” 31 Pilat le-a spus deci: „Luaţi-L voi şi judecaţi-L după Legea voastră!” Iudeii i-au spus: „Nouă nu ne este îngăduit să ucidem pe nimeni.” 32 Astfel s-a împlinit cuvântul lui Iisus pe care îl spusese arătând cu ce moarte avea să moară. 33 Atunci Pilat a intrat iarăşi în pretoriu, L-a chemat pe Iisus şi I-a zis: „Tu eşti regele iudeilor?” 34 Iisus a răspuns: „De la tine însuţi spui aceasta, sau alţii ţi-au spus despre Mine?” 35 Pilat a răspuns: „Sunt eu iudeu? Poporul Tău şi marii preoţi Te-au dat pe mâna mea. Ce ai făcut?” 36 Iisus a răspuns: „Împărăţia Mea nu este din lumea aceasta. Dacă împărăţia Mea ar fi fost din lumea aceasta, slujitorii Mei s-ar fi luptat, ca să nu fiu dat pe mâna iudeilor. Dar acum împărăţia Mea nu este de aici.” 37 Pilat I-a spus deci: „Aşadar Tu eşti rege?” Iisus a răspuns: „Da, sunt rege. Eu pentru aceasta M-am născut şi pentru aceasta am venit în lume, ca să dau mărturie pentru adevăr. Oricine este din adevăr ascultă glasul Meu.” 38 Pilat I-a spus: „Ce este adevărul?”
Condamnarea lui Iisus
După ce a spus aceasta a ieşit iar la iudei şi le-a zis: „Eu nu găsesc nici o vină în El, 39 dar la voi este obiceiul să vă eliberez pe cineva de Paşte. Vreţi deci să vi-L eliberez pe regele iudeilor?” 40 Atunci au început să strige: „Nu pe El, ci pe Baraba!” Iar Baraba era un tâlhar.
1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples. 2 And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples. 3 Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. 4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? 5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he . And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. 6 As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he , they went backward, and fell to the ground. 7 Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. 8 Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he : if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way: 9 That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none. 10 Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus. 11 Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it? 12 Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him, 13 And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year. 14 Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
15 ¶ And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest. 16 But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter. 17 Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man’s disciples? He saith, I am not. 18 And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.
19 ¶ The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine. 20 Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing. 21 Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said. 22 And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so? 23 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me? 24 Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest. 25 And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it , and said, I am not. 26 One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him? 27 Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.
28 ¶ Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover. 29 Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man? 30 They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee. 31 Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death: 32 That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die. 33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews? 34 Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me? 35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done? 36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. 37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. 38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all . 39 But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews? 40 Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.
