1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. 4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. 5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. 6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. 7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. 8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. 11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. 12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.
13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you. 14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. 15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. 16 Hereby perceive we the love of God , because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? 18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. 19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. 20 For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. 21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. 22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. 23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. 24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
1 Vedeţi cât de mult ne-a iubit Tatăl, încât să fim numiţi copii ai Lui Dumnezeu. Şi suntem! Dar lumea nu ne cunoaşte, pentru că nu L-a cunoscut nici pe El. 2 Preaiubiţilor, acum suntem copii ai lui Dumnezeu, dar ce vom fi nu s-a arătat încă. Ştim că atunci când se va arăta vom fi asemenea Lui, fiindcă Îl vom vedea aşa cum este. 3 Şi oricine are această nădejde în El devine curat, aşa cum El este curat.
Trăirea în dreptate
4 Oricine săvârşeşte păcat, săvârşeşte nelegiuire, căci păcatul este nelegiuire. 5 Ştiţi că El s-a arătat ca să ridice păcatele. Şi în El nu este păcat. 6 Oricine rămâne în El nu păcătuieşte. Oricine păcătuieşte nu L-a văzut şi nici nu L-a cunoscut. 7 Copiii mei, să nu vă înşele nimeni. Cel care înfăptuieşte dreptatea este drept, aşa cum El este drept. 8 Cel care săvârşeşte păcatul este de la Diavol, pentru că Diavolul a păcătuit încă de la început. Pentru aceasta s-a arătat Fiul lui Dumnezeu, ca să nimicească lucrările Diavolului. 9 Oricine s-a născut din Dumnezeu nu săvârşeşte păcat, căci sămânţa Lui rămâne în el şi nu poate păcătui, pentru că s-a născut din Dumnezeu. 10 Prin aceasta se arată care sunt copiii lui Dumnezeu şi care sunt copiii diavolului: oricine nu săvârşeşte dreptatea şi nu-l iubeşte pe fratele său, nu este din Dumnezeu.
Iubirea frăţească
11 Pentru că aceasta este vestea pe care aţi auzit-o de la început: să ne iubim unii pe alţii. 12 Nu asemenea lui Cain, care era de la cel Rău şi care l-a ucis pe fratele său. Şi din ce cauză l-a ucis? Pentru că faptele lui erau rele, iar ale fratelui său erau drepte. 13 Să nu vă miraţi, fraţilor, dacă vă urăşte lumea. 14 Noi ştim că am trecut de la moarte la viaţă fiindcă îi iubim pe fraţi. Cel care nu iubeşte rămâne în moarte. 15 Oricine nu-l iubeşte pe fratele său este un ucigaş. Şi ştiţi că nici un ucigaş nu are viaţa veşnică în el, viaţă care să rămână în el. 16 Prin aceasta am cunoscut iubirea: El şi-a dat viaţa pentru noi. De aceea, şi noi trebuie să ne dăm viaţa pentru fraţi. 17 Dacă cineva are bogăţiile lumii şi îl vede pe fratele său că se află în nevoie şi îşi închide inima faţă de el, cum să rămână în el iubirea lui Dumnezeu? 18 Copiii mei, să nu iubim cu vorba, nici prin cuvinte, ci cu fapta şi cu adevărul.
Încrederea în Dumnezeu
19 Şi prin aceasta vom cunoaşte că suntem din adevăr şi ne vom linişti inimile noastre înaintea Lui, 20 căci, chiar dacă inimile noastre ne condamnă, Dumnezeu este mai mare decât inimile noastre şi cunoaşte totul. 21 Preaiubiţilor, dacă inima noastră nu ne condamnă, avem îndrăzneală înaintea lui Dumnezeu. 22 Şi orice i-am cere vom primi de la El, pentru că păzim poruncile Lui şi înfăptuim ceea ce este plăcut înaintea Lui. 23 Şi aceasta este porunca Lui: să credem în Numele Fiului Său Iisus Hristos şi să ne iubim unii pe alţii, după cum ne-a dat poruncă. 24 Şi cel ce păzeşte poruncile Lui rămâne în El şi Dumnezeu rămâne în el. Din aceasta cunoaştem că rămâne în noi: din Duhul pe care ni L-a dat.
