1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. 4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. 5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. 6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. 10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. 12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. 13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. 15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. 16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. 17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. 19 We love him, because he first loved us. 20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? 21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
Discernerea duhurilor
1 Preaiubiţilor, să nu vă încredeţi în orice duh, ci puneţi duhurile la încercare şi vedeţi dacă sunt de la Dumnezeu; fiindcă mulţi profeţi falşi au apărut în lume. 2 Prin aceasta cunoaşteţi Duhul lui Dumnezeu: orice duh care mărturiseşte că Iisus Hristos a venit în trup este de la Dumnezeu. 3 Şi orice duh care nu Îl mărturiseşte pe Iisus, nu este de la Dumnezeu, ci duhul Antihristului, despre care aţi auzit că vine, iar acum este deja în lume. 4 Copiii mei, voi sunteţi de la Dumnezeu şi i-aţi învins pe aceştia, pentru că Cel care este în voi este mai mare decât cel care este în lume. 5 Ei sunt din lume, de aceea vorbesc ca din lume, iar lumea îi ascultă. 6 Noi suntem din Dumnezeu. Cel care-L cunoaşte pe Dumnezeu ne ascultă, cel care nu este din Dumnezeu nu ne ascultă. Prin aceasta cunoaştem Duhul adevărului şi duhul înşelăciunii.
Iubirea şi credinţa
7 Preaiubiţilor, să ne iubim unii pe alţii, pentru că iubirea este de la Dumnezeu şi oricine iubeşte s-a născut din Dumnezeu şi Îl cunoaşte pe Dumnezeu. 8 Cel care nu iubeşte nu L-a cunoscut pe Dumnezeu, căci Dumnezeu este iubire. 9 Prin aceasta s-a arătat iubirea lui Dumnezeu în noi, că Dumnezeu L-a trimis în lume pe Fiul Său, Unul Născut, ca să trăim prin El. 10 În aceasta stă iubirea: nu în faptul că noi L-am iubit pe Dumnezeu, ci în aceea că El ne-a iubit pe noi şi L-a trimis pe Fiul Său ca jertfă de ispăşire pentru păcatele noastre. 11 Preaiubiţilor, dacă Dumnezeu ne-a iubit astfel, şi noi trebuie să ne iubim unul pe altul. 12 Pe Dumnezeu nimeni nu L-a văzut vreodată. Dar dacă ne iubim unii pe alţii Dumnezeu rămâne în noi şi iubirea Lui în noi este desăvârşită.
13 Din aceasta cunoaştem că rămânem în El şi El în noi, fiindcă ne-a dat din Duhul Său. 14 Iar noi L-am văzut şi dăm mărturie că Tatăl L-a trimis pe Fiul ca Mântuitor al lumii. 15 Oricine dă mărturie că Iisus este Fiul lui Dumnezeu, Dumnezeu rămâne în el şi el în Dumnezeu. 16 Noi am cunoscut şi am crezut iubirea pe care o are Dumnezeu pentru noi.
Dumnezeu este iubire, iar cel care rămâne în iubire rămâne în Dumnezeu şi Dumnezeu rămâne în el. 17 Astfel se desăvârşeşte iubirea în noi, că să avem îndrăzneală în ziua judecăţii, pentru că aşa cum este El, le fel suntem şi noi în această lume. 18 În iubire nu există teamă; dimpotrivă, iubirea desăvărşită alungă teama, căci teama presupune pedeapsă, iar cel care se teme nu este desăvârşit în iubire. 19 Noi Îl iubim fiindcă El ne-a iubit mai întâi. 20 Dacă cineva spune: „Eu Îl iubesc pe Dumnezeu”, dar îl urăşte pe fratele său, este mincinos. Căci cel care nu-l iubeşte pe fratele său, pe care îl vede, nu-L poate iubi pe Dumnezeu, pe care nu-L vede. 21 Şi aceasta este porunca pe care o avem de la El: cel care Îl iubeşte pe Dumnezeu să-l iubească şi pe fratele său.
