1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, 2 And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.
3 ¶ For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife. 4 For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her. 5 And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. 6 But when Herod’s birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod. 7 Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask. 8 And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist’s head in a charger. 9 And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath’s sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her . 10 And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison. 11 And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother. 12 And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.
13 ¶ When Jesus heard of it , he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof , they followed him on foot out of the cities. 14 And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.
15 ¶ And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals. 16 But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat. 17 And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes. 18 He said, Bring them hither to me. 19 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. 20 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full. 21 And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.
22 ¶ And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. 23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. 24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. 26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. 27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. 28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. 29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. 31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? 32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. 33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
34 ¶ And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased; 36 And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.
Moartea lui Ioan Botezătorul
1 În vremea aceea, tetrarhul Irod, a auzit vorbindu-se despre Iisus 2 şi a zis slujitorilor săi: „Acesta este Ioan Botezătorul! A înviat din morţi şi de aceea se fac minuni prin el.” 3 Irod îl arestase pe Ioan, îl legase şi-l aruncase în închisoare din cauza Irodiadei, soţia fratelui său Filip. 4 Pentru că Ioan îi zicea: „Nu-ţi este îngăduit s-o ai de soţie.” 5 Irod ar fi vrut să-l omoare, dar se temea de popor, fiindcă poporul îl privea pe Ioan ca pe un profet. 6 Dar, când se serba ziua de naştere a lui Irod, fiica Irodiadei a dansat înaintea oaspeţilor şi l-a încântat pe Irod. 7 De aceea i-a făgăduit cu jurământ că îi va da orice îi va cere. 8 Îndemnată de mama sa, ea a zis: „Dă-mi aici pe o tipsie capul lui Ioan Botezătorul!” 9 Regele s-a întristat. Dar din cauza jurămintelor sale, şi de ochii celor ce şedeau la masă împreună cu el, a poruncit să i-l dea. 10 Şi a trimis să i se taie capul lui Ioan în închisoare. 11 Apoi capul a fost adus pe o tipsie şi dat fetei, care i l-a dus mamei sale. 12 Ucenicii lui Ioan au venit de i-au luat trupul, l-au îngropat şi s-au dus de I-au dat de ştire lui Iisus.
Prima înmulţire a pâinilor
13 Iisus, când a auzit vestea aceasta, a plecat de acolo într-o corabie, ca să se ducă singur la o parte, într-un loc pustiu. Mulţimile, când au auzit lucrul acesta, au ieşit din cetăţi şi s-au luat după El pe jos. 14 Când a ieşit din corabie, Iisus a văzut o mulţime mare, I s-a făcut milă de ea şi i-a vindecat pe cei bolnavi. 15 Când s-a înserat, ucenicii s-au apropiat de El şi I-au zis: „Locul acesta este pustiu şi vremea iată că a trecut. Dă drumul mulţimilor să se ducă prin sate să-şi cumpere de mâncare.” 16 „N-au nevoie să plece”, le-a răspuns Iisus, „daţi-le voi să mănânce.” 17 Dar ei I-au zis: „N-avem aici decât cinci pâini şi doi peşti.” 18 Şi El le-a spus: „Aduceţi-i aici la Mine.” 19 Apoi a poruncit mulţimilor să şadă pe iarbă, a luat cele cinci pâini şi cei doi peşti, şi-a ridicat ochii spre cer, a binecuvântat, a frânt pâinile şi le-a dat ucenicilor, iar ei le-au împărţit mulţimilor. 20 Toţi au mâncat şi s-au săturat şi s-au ridicat douăsprezece coşuri pline cu fărâmiturile rămase. 21 Cei ce mâncaseră erau ca la cinci mii de bărbaţi, în afară de femei şi de copii.
Iisus umblă pe apă
22 Imediat după aceea, Iisus i-a silit pe ucenicii Săi să intre în corabie şi să treacă înaintea Lui de partea cealaltă, până va da drumul mulţimilor. 23 După ce a dat drumul mulţimilor, s-a suit pe munte să se roage, singur deoparte. Se înnoptase şi El era singur acolo. 24 În timpul acesta, corabia era izbită tare de valuri, în largul mării, la mai multe stadii de ţărm, fiindcă vântul era împotrivă. 25 Când se îngâna ziua cu noaptea, Iisus a venit la ei umblând pe mare. 26 Când L-au văzut ucenicii umblând pe mare, s-au înspăimântat şi au zis: „Este o nălucă!” Şi au ţipat de teamă. 27 Iisus le-a zis imediat: „Îndrăzniţi, Eu sunt! Nu vă temeţi!” 28 „Doamne”, I-a răspuns Petru, „dacă eşti Tu, porunceşte-mi să vin la Tine pe ape.” 29 „Vino!” i-a zis Iisus. Petru a coborât din corabie şi a început să umble pe ape ca să meargă la Iisus. 30 Dar, când a văzut că vântul era tare, s-a temut şi, fiindcă începea să se afunde, a strigat: „Doamne, scapă-mă!” 31 Îndată, Iisus a întins mâna, L-a apucat şi i-a zis: „Puţin credinciosule, pentru ce te-ai îndoit?” 32 Şi după ce au intrat în corabie, a stat vântul. 33 Cei ce erau în corabie au venit de s-au închinat înaintea lui Iisus şi I-au zis: „Cu adevărat, Tu eşti Fiul lui Dumnezeu!” 34 După ce au trecut marea, au venit în ţinutul Ghenezaretului. 35 Oamenii din locul acela, care-L cunoşteau pe Iisus, au trimis să dea de ştire în toate împrejurimile şi au adus la El toţi bolnavii. 36 Bolnavii îl rugau să le dea voie numai să se atingă de poala hainei Lui. Şi toţi cei care s-au atins s-au vindecat.
