1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cæsar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. 2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) 3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judæa, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) 5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. 6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. 15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. 16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. 17 And when they had seen it , they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. 18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them. 21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb. 22 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord; 23 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;) 24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons. 25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. 26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, 28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, 29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: 30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, 31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; 32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. 33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him. 34 And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; 35 (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. 36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity; 37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. 38 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem. 39 And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth. 40 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him. 41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. 42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. 43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it . 44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. 45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. 46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. 47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. 48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. 49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business? 50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. 51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
Naşterea lui Iisus
1 În zilele acelea, Cezar Augustus a dat poruncă să se înscrie toată lumea. 2 Acest recensământ s-a făcut prima oară pe când Quirinius era guvernator al Siriei. 3 Şi au mers toţi să se înscrie, fiecare în cetatea sa. 4 S-a dus şi Iosif din Galileea, din cetatea Nazaret în Iudeea, în cetatea lui David, numită Betleem, pentru că era din casa şi din neamul lui David. 5 A mers să se înscrie cu Maria, logodnica sa, care era însărcinată. 6 Şi în timp ce erau acolo i s-a împlinit vremea să nască 7 şi L-a născut pe fiul ei, întâiul născut. L-a înfăşat şi L-a culcat în iesle pentru că nu mai era loc pentru ei în casa de oaspeţi.
8 Şi în acel ţinut erau nişte păstori, care stăteau pe câmp şi făceau de strajă, păzindu-şi turma în timpul nopţii. 9 Iar un înger al Domnului li s-a arătat şi slava Domnului i-a învăluit în lumină şi au fost cuprinşi de o mare frică. 10 Dar îngerul le-a spus: „Nu vă temeţi! Iată, vă vestesc o mare bucurie pentru tot poporul: 11 astăzi, în cetatea lui David vi s-a născut un Mântuitor, Hristos, Domnul. 12 Acesta vă va fi semnul: veţi găsi un prunc înfăşat şi culcat într-o iesle.” 13 Şi îndată împreună cu îngerul o mulţime de oaste cerească a început să-L laude pe Dumnezeu:
14 Slavă întru cei de sus lui Dumnezeu
şi pe pământ pace oamenilor
faţă de care El şi-a arătat bunăvoinţa.
15 După ce îngerii au plecat de la ei spre cer, păstorii îşi spuneau între ei: „Să mergem la Betleem să vedem cele ce s-au petrecut acolo după cum ne-a înştiinţat Domnul.” 16 Au mers în grabă şi i-au găsit pe Maria şi pe Iosif şi pruncul culcat în iesle. 17 Văzându-L, le-au destăinuit ce li se spusese despre copil 18 şi toţi cei care au auzit s-au mirat de cele povestite de păstori. 19 Iar Maria păstra toate cuvintele acestea cumpănindu-le în inima ei. 20 Păstorii s-au întors preamărindu-L şi lăudându-L pe Dumnezeu pentru că au auzit şi au văzut totul întocmai cum li se spusese.
21 Şi când s-au împlinit opt zile ca să fie circumcis, I-au pus numele Iisus, aşa cum Îl numise îngerul înainte să se fi zămislit în pântece.
22 Când s-au împlinit zilele pentru curăţirea lor după Legea lui Moise, L-au dus la Ierusalim ca să-L înfăţişeze Domnului, 23 precum este scris în Legea Domnului: Fiecare întâi-născut de parte bărbătească va fi închinat Domnului , 24 şi să aducă jertfă după cum spune Legea Domnului: o pereche de turturele sau doi porumbei .
25 Şi iată, era un om în Ierusalim numit Simeon, iar omul acesta era drept şi evlavios şi aştepta mângâierea lui Israel, iar Duhul Sfânt era asupra lui. 26 Duhul Sfânt îi descoperise că nu va muri înainte de a-L vedea pe Unsul Domnului. 27 A venit în Templu îndemnat de Duhul Sfânt, iar când părinţii L-au adus pe pruncul Iisus ca să împlinească pentru El ce poruncea Legea, 28 L-a luat în braţe şi L-a binecuvântat pe Dumnezeu, spunând:
29 Slobozeşte-l acum pe robul Tău, Stăpâne,
după cuvântul Tău, în pace,
30 căci ochii mei au văzut mântuirea Ta,
31 pe care ai pregătit-o înaintea tuturor popoarelor,
32 lumină pentru luminarea neamurilor
şi slava poporului Tău Israel.
33 Iar tatăl şi mama Lui se mirau de cele spuse despre El. 34 Simeon i-a binecuvântat şi i-a spus Mariei, mama lui: „Iată, copilul acesta este pus spre căderea şi ridicarea multora în Israel şi va fi un semn care va stârni împotrivire. 35 Iar prin sufletul tău va trece o sabie ca să se dezvăluie gândurile din multe inimi.”
36 Mai era acolo şi o prorociţă, Ana, fiica lui Fanuel, din tribul lui Aşer, foarte înaintată în vârstă, care trăise şapte ani cu soţul ei după fecioria ei. 37 Acum era văduvă şi, ajunsă la optzeci şi patru de ani, nu se îndepărta de Templu şi slujea postind şi rugându-se zi şi noapte. 38 A venit şi ea în acelaşi ceas şi Îl lăuda pe Domnul şi vorbea despre El tuturor celor care aşteptau mântuirea Ierusalimului.
Întoarcerea la Nazaret; copilăria lui Iisus
39 După ce au împlinit totul după Legea Domnului, s-au întors în Galileea, în cetatea lor Nazaret. 40 Iar copilul creştea şi se întărea, plin de înţelepciune. Şi harul lui Dumnezeu era asupra Lui.
41 Părinţii Lui mergeau în fiecare an la Ierusalim de sărbătoarea Paştelui. 42 Pe când avea El doisprezece ani au mers la Ierusalim după obiceiul sărbătorii 43 şi după ce s-au sfârşit zilele de sărbătoare, la întoarcere, copilul Iisus a rămas la Ierusalim fără ca părinţii Lui să ştie. 44 Crezând că este în grupul de călători, au mers cale de-o zi, apoi au început să-L caute printre rude şi cunoscuţi. 45 Şi pentru că nu L-au găsit, s-au întors la Ierusalim să-L caute. 46 După trei zile L-au găsit în Templu, stând în mijlocul învăţătorilor, ascultându-i şi întrebându-i. 47 Toţi cei care îl auzeau erau uluiţi de priceperea şi răspunsurile lui. 48 Când L-au văzut au rămas uimiţi, iar mama sa I-a spus: „Copile, de ce ne-ai făcut aşa ceva? Iată, tatăl Tău şi cu mine Te-am căutat cu îngrijorare.” 49 Şi Iisus le-a spus: „De ce M-aţi căutat? Nu ştiaţi că trebuie să fiu în cele ale Tatălui Meu?” 50 Dar ei n-au înţeles vorbele Lui. 51 Apoi au mers împreună la Nazaret, iar El le era supus. Şi mama lui păstra toate aceste cuvinte în inima ei. 52 Iar Iisus sporea în înţelepciune, în vârstă şi în har înaintea lui Dumnezeu şi a oamenilor.
