1 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: 2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof , not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; 3 Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. 4 And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away. 5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. 8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. 10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you . 11 To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
12 By Silvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I suppose, I have written briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God wherein ye stand. 13 The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you , saluteth you; and so doth Marcus my son. 14 Greet ye one another with a kiss of charity. Peace be with you all that are in Christ Jesus. Amen.
Slujirea spirituală, în smerenie
1 Pe prezbiterii voştri îi rog eu, prezbiter ca şi ei, martor al patimilor lui Hristos şi părtaş al slavei care va fi descoperită: 2 păstoriţi turma lui Dumnezeu care este în grija voastră nu din obligaţie, ci de bună voie, după voia lui Dumnezeu; nu pentru un câştig necinstit, ci din toată inima; 3 nu ca şi cum aţi stăpâni peste cei ce v-au fost rânduiţi prin sorţi, ci făcându-vă exemple pentru turmă. 4 Iar când se va arăta mai marele păstorilor veţi primi cununa cea nepieritoarea a slavei.
5 La fel şi voi, tinerilor, supuneţi-vă prezbiterilor, şi toţi, unii faţă de alţii să vă îmbrăcaţi cu smerenie fiindcă:
Dumnezeu stă împotriva celor mândri,
iar celor smeriţi le dă har.
6 Smeriţi-vă, dar, sub mâna tare a lui Dumnezeu, pentru ca, la timpul cuvenit, El să vă înalţe. 7 Lăsaţi în seama Lui toată grija voastră, fiindcă El are grijă de noi. 8 Fiţi treji la minte, vegheaţi! Vrăjmaşul vostru, Diavolul, dă târcoale ca un leu care răcneşte, căutând pe cine să înghită. 9 Împotriviţi-vă lui, tari în credinţă, ştiind că fraţii voştri din toată lumea trec prin aceleaşi suferinţe. 10 Şi Dumnezeul oricărui har, care v-a chemat la veşnica Lui slavă în Hristos Iisus, după ce veţi fi pătimit puţin timp vă va pregăti întru totul, vă va întări şi vă va face destoinici şi neclintiţi. 11 A Lui să fie stăpânirea în veci! Amin!

12 V-am scris pe scurt, prin Silvan, pe care îl socotesc un frate credincios, încurajându-vă şi mărturisind că acesta este adevăratul har al lui Dumnezeu în care să staţi. 13 Biserica de aici, din Babilon , aleasă împreună cu a voastră, şi Marcu, fiul meu, vă îmbrăţişează. 14 Îmbrăţişaţi-vă unii pe alţii cu sărutarea iubirii creştine. Pace vouă, tuturor care sunteţi în Hristos!
