1 And after the uproar was ceased, Paul called unto him the disciples, and embraced them , and departed for to go into Macedonia. 2 And when he had gone over those parts, and had given them much exhortation, he came into Greece, 3 And there abode three months. And when the Jews laid wait for him, as he was about to sail into Syria, he purposed to return through Macedonia. 4 And there accompanied him into Asia Sopater of Berea; and of the Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus; and Gaius of Derbe, and Timotheus; and of Asia, Tychicus and Trophimus. 5 These going before tarried for us at Troas. 6 And we sailed away from Philippi after the days of unleavened bread, and came unto them to Troas in five days; where we abode seven days. 7 And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight. 8 And there were many lights in the upper chamber, where they were gathered together. 9 And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead. 10 And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him said, Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him. 11 When he therefore was come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, and talked a long while, even till break of day, so he departed. 12 And they brought the young man alive, and were not a little comforted.
13 ¶ And we went before to ship, and sailed unto Assos, there intending to take in Paul: for so had he appointed, minding himself to go afoot. 14 And when he met with us at Assos, we took him in, and came to Mitylene. 15 And we sailed thence, and came the next day over against Chios; and the next day we arrived at Samos, and tarried at Trogyllium; and the next day we came to Miletus. 16 For Paul had determined to sail by Ephesus, because he would not spend the time in Asia: for he hasted, if it were possible for him, to be at Jerusalem the day of Pentecost.
17 ¶ And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of the church. 18 And when they were come to him, he said unto them, Ye know, from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons, 19 Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews: 20 And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you , but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house, 21 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. 22 And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there: 23 Save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me. 24 But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God. 25 And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more. 26 Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men . 27 For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.
28 ¶ Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. 29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. 31 Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears. 32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. 33 I have coveted no man’s silver, or gold, or apparel. 34 Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me. 35 I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.
36 ¶ And when he had thus spoken, he kneeled down, and prayed with them all. 37 And they all wept sore, and fell on Paul’s neck, and kissed him, 38 Sorrowing most of all for the words which he spake, that they should see his face no more. And they accompanied him unto the ship.
Încurajarea Bisericii prin învierea lui Eutih
1 Când a încetat tulburarea, Pavel i-a chemat pe ucenici, i-a încurajat şi i-a îmbrăţişat, apoi a plecat în Macedonia. 2 A străbătut regiunea, încurajându-i pe fraţi cu multe sfaturi, şi a ajuns în Grecia, 3 unde a rămas trei luni. Voia să se îmbarce spre Siria dar, când iudeii au pus la cale un complot împotriva lui, a hotărât să se întoarcă prin Macedonia. 4 Împreună cu el mai călătoreau şi Sopater, fiul lui Pir din Bereea, Aristarh şi Secundus din Tesalonic, Gaius din Derbe, Timotei, precum şi Tihic şi Trofim, care erau din Asia. 5 Aceştia au mers înaintea noastră şi ne-au aşteptat la Troas. 6 După zilele sărbătorii Azimelor ne-am îmbarcat din Filipi şi am mers la ei, la Troas, cale de cinci zile, şi am rămas acolo alte şapte zile.
7 În prima zi a săptămânii eram adunaţi să frângem pâinea şi Pavel, care trebuia să plece a doua zi, vorbea cu ucenicii, iar cuvântarea lui s-a prelungit până la miezul nopţii. 8 În camera de sus, unde eram adunaţi, erau multe lumânări. 9 Un tânăr pe nume Eutih stătea aşezat pe marginea ferestrei şi era tot mai copleşit de somn, în timpul vorbirii îndelungi a lui Pavel; adormind de-a-binelea, el a căzut de la etajul al treilea şi, când l-au ridicat, era mort. 10 Pavel s-a coborât şi s-a aplecat asupra lui, l-a luat în braţe şi le-a zis: „Nu vă tulburaţi, căci sufletul lui este în el”. 11 S-a ridicat, apoi, a frânt pâinea şi a mâncat şi a vorbit încă mult timp, până în zori, când a plecat. 12 Tânărul a fost adus viu iar ei s-au bucurat peste măsură.
Despărţirea de prezbiterii din Efes
13 Noi ne-am suit în corabie înaintea lui Pavel şi am plecat spre Assos, unde trebuia să-l luăm şi pe el, după cum ne înţeleseserăm, pentru că el dorise să călătorească pe uscat. 14 Când ne-a întâlnit la Assos, l-am luat cu noi şi am mers la Mitilene. 15 De acolo am navigat a doua zi ajungând până în dreptul insulei Chios, iar în cealaltă zi am trecut pe lângă Samos, ca în următoarea zi să ajungem în Milet. 16 Pavel era hotărât să continue călătoria fără să ne oprim la Efes, ca să nu întârzie prin Asia, pentru că se grăbea să fie în Ierusalim, dacă se poate, de ziua Cincizecimii.
17 Astfel, din Milet a trimis la Efes ca să-i cheme pe prezbiterii Bisericii. 18 Când au sosit, el le-a zis: „Ştiţi cum m-am purtat cu voi în tot timpul acesta, din prima zi când am ajuns în Asia, până acum. 19 Am slujit Domnului cu toată smerenia, cu multe lacrimi şi prin multe încercări în care am ajuns datorită uneltirilor iudeilor. 20 Nu am lăsat deoparte nimic din ceea ce vă era de folos, nici în vestire nici în învăţătură, atât în public cât şi în casele voastre, 21 ci am mărturisit şi iudeilor şi grecilor pocăinţa faţă de Dumnezeu şi credinţa în Domnul nostru Iisus. 22 Iată că, acum, sunt călăuzit de Duhul Sfânt să merg la Ierusalim fără să ştiu ce mi se va întâmpla acolo – 23 decât că, aşa cum Duhul Sfânt îmi mărturiseşte prin cetăţi, ştiu că mă aşteaptă lanţuri şi necazuri. 24 Dar nu mă gândesc deloc la viaţa mea, nici la preţul ei, ci cum să-mi închei drumul şi slujirea pe care le-am primit de la Domnul Iisus, ca să mărturisesc evanghelia harului lui Dumnezeu.
25 Şi acum, iată, ştiu că nu mă veţi mai vedea, voi toţi cei printre care am trăit vestind Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu. 26 De aceea, vă declar astăzi că sunt curat de sângele tuturor. 27 Nu am lăsat nimic deoparte ci v-am vestit toată voia lui Dumnezeu. 28 Fiţi atenţi la voi înşivă şi la toată turma peste care v-a aşezat Duhul Sfânt păzitori, ca să păstoriţi Biserica lui Dumnezeu pe care şi-a câştigat-o cu însuşi sângele Său. 29 Ştiu că după plecarea mea se vor strecura între voi lupi cruzi care nu vor cruţa turma, 30 se vor ridica dintre voi oameni care vor da învăţături rătăcite ca să-i tragă pe ucenici după ei. 31 De aceea, vegheaţi şi aduceţi-vă aminte că, timp de trei ani, şi ziua şi noaptea nu am încetat să vă îndemn pe fiecare, cu lacrimi. 32 Şi acum vă încredinţez lui Dumnezeu şi cuvântului harului Său, cel ce poate să vă zidească şi să vă dea moştenirea împreună cu toţi cei sfinţiţi. 33 Nu am poftit nimic de la nimeni, nici argint, nici aur, nici îmbrăcăminte. 34 Ştiţi voi înşivă că am muncit cu aceste mâini ale mele şi pentru nevoile mele şi pentru cele ale tovarăşilor mei. 35 V-am arătat în toate că trebuie să vă osteniţi să-i ajutaţi pe cei slabi şi că trebuie să vă aduceţi aminte de cuvântul Domnului Iisus care zicea: Mai fericit eşti când dai decât atunci când iei.”
36 Spunând aceste cuvinte, Pavel a îngenuncheat împreună cu ei toţi şi s-a rugat. 37 Au început să plângă toţi pe umărul lui, cu multă jale, şi l-au îmbrăţişat, sărutându-l. 38 Erau îndureraţi mai ales de cuvântul pe care li-l spusese, că nu se vor mai vedea. Şi l-au condus până la corabie.
