1 Now when Festus was come into the province, after three days he ascended from Cæsarea to Jerusalem. 2 Then the high priest and the chief of the Jews informed him against Paul, and besought him, 3 And desired favour against him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem, laying wait in the way to kill him. 4 But Festus answered, that Paul should be kept at Cæsarea, and that he himself would depart shortly thither . 5 Let them therefore, said he, which among you are able, go down with me , and accuse this man, if there be any wickedness in him. 6 And when he had tarried among them more than ten days, he went down unto Cæsarea; and the next day sitting on the judgment seat commanded Paul to be brought. 7 And when he was come, the Jews which came down from Jerusalem stood round about, and laid many and grievous complaints against Paul, which they could not prove. 8 While he answered for himself, Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor yet against Cæsar, have I offended any thing at all. 9 But Festus, willing to do the Jews a pleasure, answered Paul, and said, Wilt thou go up to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these things before me? 10 Then said Paul, I stand at Cæsar’s judgment seat, where I ought to be judged: to the Jews have I done no wrong, as thou very well knowest. 11 For if I be an offender, or have committed any thing worthy of death, I refuse not to die: but if there be none of these things whereof these accuse me, no man may deliver me unto them. I appeal unto Cæsar. 12 Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Hast thou appealed unto Cæsar? unto Cæsar shalt thou go.
13 And after certain days king Agrippa and Bernice came unto Cæsarea to salute Festus. 14 And when they had been there many days, Festus declared Paul’s cause unto the king, saying, There is a certain man left in bonds by Felix: 15 About whom, when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me , desiring to have judgment against him. 16 To whom I answered, It is not the manner of the Romans to deliver any man to die, before that he which is accused have the accusers face to face, and have licence to answer for himself concerning the crime laid against him. 17 Therefore, when they were come hither, without any delay on the morrow I sat on the judgment seat, and commanded the man to be brought forth. 18 Against whom when the accusers stood up, they brought none accusation of such things as I supposed: 19 But had certain questions against him of their own superstition, and of one Jesus, which was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive. 20 And because I doubted of such manner of questions, I asked him whether he would go to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these matters. 21 But when Paul had appealed to be reserved unto the hearing of Augustus, I commanded him to be kept till I might send him to Cæsar. 22 Then Agrippa said unto Festus, I would also hear the man myself. To morrow, said he, thou shalt hear him.
23 And on the morrow, when Agrippa was come, and Bernice, with great pomp, and was entered into the place of hearing, with the chief captains, and principal men of the city, at Festus’ commandment Paul was brought forth. 24 And Festus said, King Agrippa, and all men which are here present with us, ye see this man, about whom all the multitude of the Jews have dealt with me, both at Jerusalem, and also here, crying that he ought not to live any longer. 25 But when I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death, and that he himself hath appealed to Augustus, I have determined to send him. 26 Of whom I have no certain thing to write unto my lord. Wherefore I have brought him forth before you, and specially before thee, O king Agrippa, that, after examination had, I might have somewhat to write. 27 For it seemeth to me unreasonable to send a prisoner, and not withal to signify the crimes laid against him.
Pavel înaintea lui Festus
1 Astfel, la trei zile după ce a ajuns în provincie, Festus a urcat din Cezareea la Ierusalim. 2 Marii preoţi şi iudeii de seamă au venit înaintea lui să-l acuze pe Pavel şi l-au rugat 3 să le facă o favoare şi să-l trimită la Ierusalim; ei însă puneau la cale un complot ca să-l ucidă pe drum. 4 Dar Festus le-a răspuns că Pavel este păzit în Cezareea şi el însuşi va trebui să plece acolo, cât de curând. 5 „Cei mai de vază dintre voi”, le-a zis el, „să coboare şi, dacă este ceva nelalocul lui cu acest om, să-l acuze!”
6 Festus a mai stat la ei vreo opt sau zece zile, apoi a coborât la Cezareea, iar în ziua următoare s-a aşezat pe scaunul de judecător şi a poruncit să fie adus Pavel. 7 Când a sosit, iudeii care coborâseră din Ierusalim l-au înconjurat aducându-i multe învinuiri grele, pe care nu le puteau dovedi. 8 Pavel s-a apărat: „Eu n-am păcătuit nici împotriva Legii iudeilor, nici împotriva Templului, nici împotriva Cezarului!” 9 Festus însă, dorind să le facă iudeilor o favoare, i-a răspuns lui Pavel: „Vrei să urci la Ierusalim şi să fii judecat acolo, înaintea mea, cu privire la lucrurile acestea?” 10 Pavel, atunci, i-a zis: „Eu vreau să stau înaintea scaunului de judecată al Cezarului, acolo trebuie să fiu judecat. Nu le-am greşit cu nimic iudeilor aşa cum bine ştii şi tu. 11 Iar dacă am greşit şi am făcut ceva vrednic de moarte, nu mi-e teamă să mor; dar, dacă nu este adevărată nici una din acuzaţiile lor, nimeni nu mă poate preda lor. Fac apel la Cezar!” 12 După ce Festus s-a consultat cu sfetnicii săi, i-a răspuns: „Ai făcut apel la Cezar, înaintea Cezarului vei merge!”
13 După câteva zile, regele Agripa şi Berenice au sosit în Cezareea ca să îl salute pe Festus. 14 După ce au petrecut multe zile acolo, Festus i-a prezentat regelui lucrurile privitoare la Pavel şi i-a zis: „Omul acesta a fost lăsat de Felix în lanţuri 15 şi când am fost în Ierusalim s-au înfăţişat marii preoţi şi bătrânii iudeilor cerându-mi să-l condamn. 16 Le-am răspuns că romanii n-au obiceiul să predea pe cineva înainte ca acuzatul să-şi întâlnească acuzatorii şi să se apere cu privire la învinuiri. 17 S-au adunat aici, aşadar, şi fără amânare, m-am aşezat pe scaunul de judecător şi am poruncit să fie adus acest om. 18 Acuzatorii s-au strâns în jurul lui, dar nu i-au adus nici o învinuire gravă, cum m-aş fi aşteptat. 19 Aveau împotriva lui doar nişte pricini legate de credinţele neamului lor şi de un oarecare Iisus, care a murit, dar despre care Pavel spune că este viu. 20 Nefiind bine lămurit despre pricinile acestea, l-am întrebat dacă nu ar vrea să meargă la Ierusalim să fie judecat acolo în legătură cu ele. 21 Însă, dacă Pavel a făcut apel la Cezar, ca să fie păzit şi dus la Împărat pentru judecată, am poruncit să fie pus sub pază până îl voi trimite Cezarului.” 22 Atunci Agripa i-a spus lui Festus: „Aş vrea să-l ascult şi eu pe omul acesta.” Festus i-a răspuns: „Îl vei auzi chiar mâine.”
23 Astfel, a doua zi, au venit Agripa şi Berenice, cu mare fast, şi au intrat în sala de judecată împreună cu comandanţii şi bărbaţii de frunte ai cetăţii, iar Festus a poruncit să fie adus Pavel. 24 Festus a spus: „Rege Agripa şi voi toţi, bărbaţi adunaţi aici de faţă, priviţi-l pe acela pentru care toată mulţimea iudeilor m-a implorat şi aici şi în Ierusalim strigând că un astfel de om nu merită să trăiască! 25 Pentru că eu însumi nu am găsit că ar fi făcut ceva vrednic de moarte şi pentru că el însuşi a cerut să meargă înaintea Împăratului, am hotărât să-l trimit. 26 Dar, pentru că nu am ce să scriu Împăratului meu, cu limpezime, l-am adus înaintea voastră şi, mai cu seamă, înaintea ta, rege Agripa, ca în urma judecăţii voastre să am ce să scriu. 27 Căci eu aşa cred, că ar fi lipsit de noimă, să îi trimit un întemniţat fără să arăt şi ce acuzaţii i se aduc.”
