1 Then said the high priest, Are these things so? 2 And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran, 3 And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee. 4 Then came he out of the land of the Chaldæans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell. 5 And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child. 6 And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years. 7 And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place. 8 And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs. 9 And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him, 10 And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house. 11 Now there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Chanaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance. 12 But when Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first. 13 And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph’s kindred was made known unto Pharaoh. 14 Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him , and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls. 15 So Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, he, and our fathers, 16 And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem. 17 But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt, 18 Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph. 19 The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live. 20 In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father’s house three months: 21 And when he was cast out, Pharaoh’s daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son. 22 And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds. 23 And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel. 24 And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him , and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian: 25 For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not. 26 And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another? 27 But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us? 28 Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday? 29 Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons. 30 And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush. 31 When Moses saw it , he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it , the voice of the Lord came unto him, 32 Saying , I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold. 33 Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground. 34 I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt. 35 This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush. 36 He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.
37 ¶ This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear. 38 This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us: 39 To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt, 40 Saying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us: for as for this Moses, which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him. 41 And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands. 42 Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness? 43 Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon. 44 Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen. 45 Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David; 46 Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob. 47 But Solomon built him an house. 48 Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet, 49 Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest? 50 Hath not my hand made all these things?
51 ¶ Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did , so do ye. 52 Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers: 53 Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.
54 ¶ When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth. 55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, 56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. 57 Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord, 58 And cast him out of the city, and stoned him : and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man’s feet, whose name was Saul. 59 And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God , and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. 60 And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

Dumnezeul slavei i s-a arătat părintelui nostru Avraam pe când era în Mesopotamia înainte să se stabilească în Haran, 3 şi i-a zis: Ieşi din ţara ta şi din familia ta şi du-te în ţara pe care ţi-o voi arăta . 4 Atunci, a ieşit din ţara caldeilor şi a locuit în Haran. După moartea tatălui său, Dumnezeu l-a strămutat în ţara unde trăiţi voi acum, 5 dar nu i-a dat nici o moştenire în ea, nici măcar un petec de pământ, ci i-a făgăduit că i-o va da în stăpânire lui şi urmaşilor lui, deşi el nu avea încă nici un copil. 6 Şi Dumnezeu i-a vorbit aşa: Urmaşii tăi vor fi străini într-un pământ străin şi vor robi acolo, suferind vreme de patru sute de ani. 7 Dar Eu voi judeca neamul care îi va ţine robi. Şi Dumnezeu a spus: După aceea vor ieşi şi Îmi vor sluji în ţara aceasta. 8 Şi i-a dat legământul tăierii împrejur. El l-a născut pe Isaac şi l-a tăiat împrejur în ziua a opta, şi Isaac pe Iacov, iar Iacov pe cei doisprezece patriarhi.
9 Patriarhii, invidiindu-l pe Iosif, l-au vândut în Egipt, însă Dumnezeu a fost cu el 10 şi l-a scăpat din toate necazurile şi i-a dat har şi înţelepciune înaintea faraonului, împăratul egiptenilor, care l-a pus conducător peste Egipt şi peste toată casa lui. 11 Apoi peste întreg Egiptul şi peste Canaan au venit foamete şi lipsuri mari, iar părinţii noştri nu mai găseau hrană. 12 Iacov a auzit că există grâu în Egipt şi i-a trimis întâia oară pe părinţii noştri acolo. 13 Iar a doua oară, Iosif s-a făcut cunoscut fraţilor săi şi faraonul a aflat la rândul său din ce neam era Iosif. 14 Iosif a trimis să-l cheme pe Iacov, tatăl său, şi pe toţi din neamul său, în total şaptezeci şi cinci de suflete. 15 Astfel, Iacov s-a coborât în Egipt şi acolo şi-a sfârşit viaţa, el şi părinţii noştri. 16 Mai târziu, ei au fost strămutaţi în Sihem şi aşezaţi în mormântul pe care Avraam l-a cumpărat acolo cu argint de la fiii lui Emor din Sihem.
17 Cum se apropia vremea făgăduinţei făcute de Dumnezeu lui Avraam, poporul a crescut şi s-a înmulţit la număr în Egipt, 18 până s-a ridicat un alt faraon, care nu îl cunoscuse pe Iosif. 19 El ne-a înşelat poporul şi s-a purtat cu răutate cu părinţii noştri, silindu-i să-şi lase nou-născuţii pradă morţii, ca să nu se mai înmulţească poporul. 20 În vremea aceea s-a născut Moise, care era frumos înaintea lui Dumnezeu. Timp de trei luni el a fost hrănit şi îngrijit în casa tatălui său; 21 apoi, când l-au părăsit, fiica faraonului l-a luat şi l-a crescut ca pe fiul ei. 22 Astfel, Moise a fost învăţat în toată înţelepciunea egiptenilor şi a ajuns un om puternic în cuvinte şi în fapte.
23 Când a împlinit patruzeci de ani, a început să se gândească în inima sa să-i cerceteze pe fraţii lui, pe fiii lui Israel. 24 Şi văzând pe unul dintre ei că fusese nedreptăţit, l-a apărat, răzbunându-l pe cel asuprit şi omorându-l pe egiptean. 25 Se gândea că fraţii săi înţeleg că, prin mâna lui, Dumnezeu le dă libertatea, dar ei n-au priceput. 26 În ziua următoare, Moise a văzut că doi dintre ei se băteau şi i-a îndemnat să se împace, spunând: Oameni buni, doar sunteţi fraţi, de ce vă nedreptăţiţi unul pe altul? 27 Dar cel care îl lovea pe aproapele său, l-a împins şi i-a zis: Cine te-a pus pe tine domn şi judecător peste noi? 28 Nu cumva vrei să mă omori la fel cum l-ai omorât ieri pe egiptean? 29 Când a auzit vorba aceasta Moise a fugit şi a trăit ca străin în ţara Madian, unde a avut doi fii.
30 După împlinirea altor patruzeci de ani, i s-a arătat în deşertul muntelui Sinai un înger, în flacăra unui rug care ardea. 31 Moise s-a minunat de ceea ce vedea şi, când s-a apropiat ca să înţeleagă mai bine, s-a auzit glasul Domnului: 32 Eu sunt Dumnezeul părinţilor tăi, Dumnezeul lui Avraam, Isaac şi Iacov. Atunci Moise a început să tremure şi nu îndrăznea să privească. 33 Domnul i-a zis: Scoate-ţi încălţămintea din picioare, căci locul pe care stai este un pământ sfânt. 34 Am văzut răul suferit de poporul Meu în Egipt şi am auzit geamătul lor şi m-am coborât să-i eliberez. Acum, vino să te trimit în Egipt! 35 Pe acest Moise, pe care ei îl respinseseră când au zis: Cine te-a pus pe tine domn şi judecător peste noi? , Dumnezeu l-a trimis acum să fie domn şi izbăvitor, prin îngerul care i se arătase în rug. 36 El i-a scos afară din Egipt făcând minuni şi semne în ţara Egiptului şi în Marea Roşie şi în pustiu, timp de patruzeci de ani. 37 El, Moise, este cel care le-a spus fiilor lui Israel: Dumnezeu vă va ridica dintre fraţii voştri un alt profet ca mine. 38 El a adunat poporul în pustiu, împreună cu îngerul care îi vorbea pe muntele Sinai, lui şi părinţilor noştri, şi el este cel care a primit cuvintele vieţii ca să ni le dea nouă. 39 Pe acest Moise n-au vrut să-l asculte părinţii noştri şi l-au respins întorcându-şi inimile spre Egipt 40 şi i-au zis lui Aaron: Fă-ne dumnezei care să meargă înaintea noastră pentru că nu ştim ce s-a întâmplat cu acest Moise care ne-a scos din ţara Egiptului! 41 În zilele acelea, şi-au făcut un viţel, au adus idolului lor jertfe şi au sărbătorit astfel lucrarea mâinilor lor. 42 Atunci Dumnezeu şi-a întors faţa şi i-a lăsat în seama închinării lor la stelele cerului, cum este scris în cartea profeţilor:
Nu Mie mi-aţi jertfit
jertfe şi animale înjunghiate,
popor al lui Israel,
în cei patruzeci de ani din pustiu,
43 ci lui Moloh i-aţi purtat cortul
şi steaua dumnezeului vostru, Refan,
idolii pe care i-aţi făcut
să vă închinaţi lor.
De aceea şi Eu vă voi strămuta
dincolo de Babilon.
44 Părinţii noştri au avut însă Cortul Mărturiei în pustiu, aşa cum le poruncise Cel ce a vorbit cu Moise să-l construiască după modelul pe care îl văzuse. 45 Pe acesta l-au primit părinţii noştri şi l-au adus conduşi de Iosua, în ţara neamurilor pe care le-a alungat Dumnezeu dinaintea părinţilor noştri; şi a stat aici până în zilele lui David. 46 David a aflat bunăvoinţă înaintea lui Dumnezeu şi i-a cerut să zidească un locaş pentru casa lui Iacov. 47 Dar casa I-a zidit-o Solomon. 48 Însă Cel Preaînalt nu locuieşte în case ridicate de mâna omului, aşa cum spune profetul:
49 Cerul este Tronul Meu,
iar pământul, aşternut
picioarelor Mele.
Ce casă Mi-aţi putea zidi voi,
zice Domnul,
ce fel de loc în care să Mă odihnesc?
50 Oare nu mâna Mea a creat toate lucrurile acestea?
51 Dar voi, oameni încăpăţânaţi, cu inimi şi urechi care nu ascultă de Dumnezeu, mereu vă împotriviţi Duhului Sfânt şi aşa cum au fost părinţii voştri la fel sunteţi şi voi! 52 Pe care din profeţi nu i-au persecutat părinţii voştri? Ei i-au omorât pe cei care vesteau sosirea Celui Drept, iar acum voi L-aţi vândut şi L-aţi ucis! 53 Voi, cei care aţi primit Legea dată prin îngeri, dar n-aţi păzit-o!”
Ştefan este omorât cu pietre
54 Când au auzit ei ce spunea, au început să fiarbă de furie în inimile lor şi scrâşneau din dinţi împotriva lui. 55 El, plin de Duhul Sfânt, şi-a îndreptat ochii spre cer şi a văzut slava lui Dumnezeu şi pe Iisus stând la dreapta lui Dumnezeu 56 şi a zis: „Iată, văd cerurile deschise şi pe Fiul Omului stând la dreapta lui Dumnezeu.” 57 Ei însă strigând cu toată puterea, şi-au astupat urechile şi s-au aruncat asupra lui cu un singur gând. 58 L-au scos afară din cetate şi l-au omorât cu pietre. Toţi martorii şi-au lăsat hainele la picioarele unui tânăr numit Saul 59 şi au început să arunce cu pietre în Ştefan, care se ruga şi zicea: „Doamne Iisuse, primeşte duhul meu!” 60 Apoi, a căzut în genunchi şi a strigat cu putere: „Doamne, nu le socoti păcatul acesta!” Şi, zicând cuvintele acestea, a murit .
