1 For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; 2 To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; 3 Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually. 4 Now consider how great this man was , unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils. 5 And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham: 6 But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises. 7 And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better. 8 And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them , of whom it is witnessed that he liveth. 9 And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham. 10 For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him. 11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron? 12 For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law. 13 For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar. 14 For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood. 15 And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest, 16 Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life. 17 For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. 18 For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof. 19 For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did ; by the which we draw nigh unto God. 20 And inasmuch as not without an oath he was made priest : 21 (For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:) 22 By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament. 23 And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death: 24 But this man , because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. 25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. 26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; 27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself. 28 For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore.
Iisus şi rânduiala preoţească a lui Melhisedec
1 Acest Melhisedec, rege al Salemului, preot al lui Dumnezeu cel Prea Înalt, l-a întâmpinat pe Avraam când se întorcea de la nimicirea regilor şi l-a binecuvântat, 2 iar Avraam i-a dat a zecea parte din toate; Melhisedec înseamnă, mai întâi de toate, rege al dreptăţii , apoi rege al Salemului , adică „regele păcii”. 3 Fără tată, fără mamă, fără genealogie, fără să aibă un început al zilelor ori un sfârşit al vieţii, asemănat însă cu Fiul lui Dumnezeu, el rămâne preot pentru vecie.
4 Înţelegeţi, dar, cât de mare este el, dacă până şi patriarhul Avraam i-a dat zeciuială din prada de război! 5 Fiii lui Levi care au ajuns preoţi au primit poruncă să ia zeciuială de la popor, după Lege, adică tocmai de la aceia care sunt fraţii lor, născuţi şi ei tot din Avraam. 6 Dar Melhisedec, care nu se trage din neamul lor, a luat zeciuială de la Avraam şi l-a binecuvântat, ca pe unul ce avea făgăduinţele. 7 Fără îndoială că cel mai mic este binecuvântat de cel mai mare. 8 Pe deoparte iau zeciuială nişte oameni muritori, iar pe de alta unul despre care se mărturiseşte că este viu! 9 Iar prin Avraam, ca să zicem aşa, a plătit şi Levi zeciuială, el, cel ce strângea zeciuiala de la ceilalţi! 10 Şi aceasta pentru că Levi era în coapsa părintelui său când Avraam l-a întâlnit pe Melhisedec.
11 Aşadar, dacă desăvârşirea ar fi fost prin preoţia leviţilor – pentru că sub această preoţie a primit poporul Legea, ce nevoie mai era să se ridice un alt preot, după rânduiala lui Melhisedec, şi nu unul numit după rânduiala lui Aaron? 12 Căci, dacă se schimbă preoţia, atunci neapărat trebuie să se schimbe şi Legea! 13 Iar Cel despre care se zic aceste lucruri face parte dintr-o altă seminţie, din care nimeni nu a mai slujit la altar: 14 căci este ştiut că Domnul nostru se trage din seminţia lui Iuda, despre care Moise n-a spus nimic cu privire la preoţie. 15 Iar lucrurile devin încă şi mai limpezi cu privire la ridicarea unui preot asemenea lui Melhisedec, 16 pentru că el nu ajunge preot după legea descendenţei trupeşti, ci după puterea unei vieţi nepieritoare. 17 Căci se dă mărturia:
Tu eşti preot în veac
după rânduiala lui Melhisedec.
18 Astfel, porunca dintâi este desfiinţată pentru că este slabă şi nefolositoare, 19 – căci Legea nu a dus nici un lucru la desăvârşire – şi se aduce în locul ei o nădejde mai bună, prin care ne apropiem de Dumnezeu.
20 Iar aceasta nu s-a făcut fără jurământ. În timp ce leviţii deveneau preoţi fără jurământ, 21 despre El, Cel ce a jurat zice aşa:
Domnul a jurat
şi nu se va căi:
Tu eşti preot în veac.
22 Prin aceasta, Iisus a devenit garantul unui legământ mai bun. 23 Iar, dacă leviţii sunt mulţi la număr, din cauză că moartea îi împiedica să rămână preoţi la nesfârşit, 24 Iisus, prin faptul că rămâne în veac, are o preoţie netrecătoare. 25 De aceea, poate să-i mântuiască în mod desăvârşit pe cei ce se apropie de Dumnezeu prin El, pentru că El este viu pentru totdeauna ca să mijlocească pentru ei.
26 Şi tocmai un astfel de mare preot ne trebuia: sfânt, fără răutate, fără pată, aparte de cei păcătoşi şi înălţat mai presus de ceruri. 27 El nu are nevoie, ca ceilalţi mari preoţi, să aducă în fiecare zi o jertfă pentru păcate, mai întâi pentru ale Sale şi apoi pentru ale poporului, căci a adus jertfă o singură dată, când s-a jertfit pe Sine. 28 Căci Legea pune mari preoţi nişte oameni cu slăbiciuni, dar cuvântul jurământului, venit după Lege, Îl pune mare preot pe Fiul care este desăvârşit în veci.
