1 After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. 3 In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. 4 For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. 5 And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case , he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? 7 The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. 8 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. 9 And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.
10 ¶ The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed. 11 He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk. 12 Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk? 13 And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place. 14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee. 15 The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole. 16 And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.
17 ¶ But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. 18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God. 19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. 20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel. 21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them ; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will. 22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: 23 That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him. 24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. 25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. 26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; 27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. 28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. 30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me. 31 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.
32 ¶ There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. 33 Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth. 34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved. 35 He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.
36 ¶ But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. 37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. 38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.
39 ¶ Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. 40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. 41 I receive not honour from men. 42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. 43 I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. 44 How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. 46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. 47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?
Vindecarea unui om paralizat la scăldătoarea Betesda
1 După acestea, a fost o sărbătoare a iudeilor şi Iisus a urcat la Ierusalim. 2 La Ierusalim, lângă Poarta Oilor, este o scăldătoare numită în evreieşte Betesda, care are cinci pridvoare. 3 În ele zăceau o mulţime de bolnavi: orbi, şchiopi, paralizaţi. 5 Şi era acolo un om bolnav de treizeci şi opt de ani. 6 Iisus, văzându-l că zace şi ştiind că era bolnav de multă vreme, i-a spus: „Vrei să te însănătoşeşti?” 7 Cel bolnav I-a răspuns: „Doamne, nu am pe nimeni să mă arunce în scăldătoare când se tulbură apa şi, până să ajung eu, altcineva coboară înaintea mea.” 8 Iisus i-a spus: „Ridică-te, ia-ţi patul şi umblă!” 9 Şi îndată omul s-a însănătoşit, şi-a luat patul şi a început să umble. Dar acea zi era o zi de sâmbătă. 10 Aşadar iudeii i-au spus celui care fusese vindecat: „Este sâmbătă, deci nu îţi este îngăduit să-ţi cari patul.” 11 El le-a răspuns: „Cel care m-a însănătoşit, acela mi-a spus: Ia-ţi patul şi umblă!” 12 L-au întrebat: „Cine este omul care ţi-a spus: Ia-ţi patul şi umblă?” 13 Însă cel vindecat nu ştia cine este, pentru că Iisus nu era de găsit, fiind multă lume în acel loc. 14 După acestea, Iisus l-a găsit în Templu şi i-a spus: „Iată, acum te-ai făcut bine. Să nu mai păcătuieşti, ca să nu ţi se întâmple ceva mai rău.” 15 Omul a plecat şi le-a dat de ştire iudeilor că Iisus era cel care îl vindecase. 16 Din această cauză iudeii Îl urmăreau pe Iisus, fiindcă făcea aceste lucruri sâmbăta. 17 Dar Iisus le-a răspuns: „Tatăl Meu lucrează până acum, şi lucrez şi Eu.” 18 Pentru aceasta iudeii căutau şi mai mult să-L omoare, fiindcă nu numai că încălca ziua sâmbetei, dar Îl şi numea pe Dumnezeu Tatăl Său, făcându-se pe Sine egal cu Dumnezeu.
Unitatea dintre Dumnezeu Tatăl şi Fiul
19 Aşadar Iisus a răspuns: „Adevărat, adevărat vă spun, Fiul nu poate să facă nimic de la Sine, ci doar ce Îl vede pe Tatăl făcând: fiindcă lucrurile pe care le face El, şi Fiul le face la fel. 20 Căci Tatăl Îl iubeşte pe Fiul şi Îi arată tot ce face şi-i va arăta lucrări şi mai mari decât acestea, aşa încât să vă uimiţi. 21 Căci după cum Tatăl îi învie pe cei morţi şi le dă viaţă, la fel şi Fiul dă viaţă cui vrea. 22 Fiindcă Tatăl nu judecă pe nimeni, ci I-a dat Fiului întreaga judecată, 23 ca toţi să-L cinstească pe Fiul după cum Îl cinstesc pe Tatăl. Cine nu Îl cinsteşte pe Fiul, nu Îl cinsteşte nici pe Tatăl care L-a trimis. 24 Adevărat, adevărat vă spun că acela care îmi ascultă cuvântul şi crede în Cel care M-a trimis, are viaţa veşnică şi nu vine la judecată, ci a trecut de la moarte la viaţă. 25 Adevărat, adevărat vă spun că vine ceasul şi acum a venit, când morţii vor auzi glasul Fiului lui Dumnezeu, iar cei care-l vor auzi, vor trăi. 26 Căci după cum Tatăl are viaţă în Sine Însuşi, la fel I-a dat şi Fiului să aibă viaţă în Sine Însuşi. 27 Şi I-a dat puterea să judece, pentru că este Fiul Omului. 28 Nu vă miraţi de aceasta, fiindcă vine ceasul în care toţi cei din morminte Îi vor auzi glasul 29 şi cei care au făcut fapte bune vor ieşi la înviere pentru viaţă, iar cei care au săvârşit răul vor ieşi la înviere pentru judecată.
30 Eu nu pot să fac nimic de la Mine Însumi: după cum aud, aşa judec, iar judecata Mea este dreaptă, fiindcă Eu nu caut voia Mea, ci voia Celui ce M-a trimis.
Martorii lui Iisus: Tatăl, Ioan, Iisus Însuşi
31 Dacă Eu dau mărturie pentru Mine, mărturia Mea nu este adevărată. 32 Altul este Cel care dă mărturie pentru Mine şi ştiu că mărturia pe care o dă pentru Mine este adevărată. 33 Voi aţi trimis la Ioan, iar el a dat mărturie pentru adevăr. 34 Dar Eu nu primesc mărturie de la un om, ci spun acestea ca să vă mântuiţi. 35 Ioan era făclia ce arde şi luminează, iar voi aţi vrut să vă bucuraţi o vreme de lumina lui. 36 Dar Eu am o mărturie mai mare decât cea a lui Ioan: lucrările pe care Mi le-a dat Tatăl să le împlinesc, aceste lucrări dau mărturie pentru Mine că Tatăl M-a trimis. 37 Tatăl care M-a trimis, El a dat mărturie pentru Mine. Voi nici nu I-aţi auzit niciodată glasul, nici chipul nu I l-aţi văzut, 38 iar cuvântul Lui nu rămâne în voi, fiindcă nu-L credeţi pe acela pe care L-a trimis. 39 Cercetaţi Scripturile, fiindcă socotiţi că în ele aveţi viaţa veşnică: dar şi acestea dau mărturie pentru Mine 40 şi nu vreţi să veniţi la Mine ca să aveţi viaţă.
41 Nu primesc slavă de la oameni, 42 dar vă cunosc: nu aveţi în voi iubirea lui Dumnezeu. 43 Eu am venit în Numele Tatălui Meu şi nu Mă primiţi. Dacă cineva ar veni în numele lui însuşi, pe el l-aţi primi. 44 Cum puteţi crede voi, care vă daţi slavă unii altora, dar nu căutaţi slava care vine de la unicul Dumnezeu? 45 Să nu credeţi că Eu vă voi învinui înaintea Tatălui. Are cine să vă învinuiască: Moise, în care v-aţi pus nădejdea. 46 Căci dacă l-aţi fi crezut pe Moise, M-aţi fi crezut şi pe Mine, fiindcă el a scris despre Mine. 47 Dar dacă nu credeţi ce a scris el, cum veţi crede cuvintele Mele?”
