Bijbel – NBV21

Neerlandicus Pieter Waalewijn werkte mee aan de Nieuwe Bijbelvertaling en deed opnieuw mee met de revisie van deze vertaling. Hoe kijkt hij terug op het revisietraject en hoe waardeert hij de revisie?

Pieter, welke rol had jij in het revisieproject?

Ik was een van de neerlandici van het vertaalteam. Ik heb met alle exegeten mogen samenwerken aan tientallen bijbelboeken. Mijn kennis van het Nederlands en van literatuur bepaalde mijn inbreng in het project en vulde de tekstbenadering van de exegeten aan. Ik heb het als een groot voordeel ervaren dat ik als neerlandicus over de hele breedte van de Bijbel ingezet kon worden, van Genesis tot Openbaring en 2 Makkabeeën: zoveel verschillende genres, zoveel verschillende kwesties.

Doordat ik indertijd ook aan de Nieuwe Bijbelvertaling (NBV) heb meegewerkt, en dat vertaalproces intensief en van binnenuit heb meegemaakt, kon ik in de revisie (NBV21) ook die ervaring inbrengen. Er is bij de NBV over alles heel goed nagedacht, dus het zou zonde zijn om al die wielen opnieuw te gaan uitvinden. De besluiten en afspraken uit de NBV-tijd waren goed vastgelegd, maar niet in beton gegoten. We hebben nu in de revisie het goede van de NBV behouden – daar heb ik me als oud-NBV’er hard voor gemaakt – en de vertaling waar nodig en mogelijk verbeterd.

Nadat we alle boeken gereviseerd hadden, heb ik de hele Bijbel nog eens doorgenomen als eindredacteur.

Wat is het belang van goed Nederlands bij een boek als de Bijbel?

Het is voor wie in het Nederlands leest natuurlijk altijd belangrijk dat de tekst gesteld of vertaald is in goed Nederlands. Dat geldt voor elke tekst: handleiding, verkiezingsprogramma, kinderboek, recept, reisgids. Bij teksten met literaire kwaliteiten is dit belang nog groter: de taal is daar een bepalende factor voor de waarde van de tekst en de beleving ervan. Een goede, maar krakkemikkig vertaalde roman of dichtbundel is voor de Nederlandse lezer alsnog mislukt. En een op zichzelf belangwekkend gegeven kan door een onbeholpen stijl in de knop breken.

Dat alles geldt zeker ook voor de Bijbel. De Bijbel verdient het om zo adequaat mogelijk te worden vertaald. Daarbij moet je natuurlijk recht doen aan de betekenis van de brontekst, maar evengoed zorg dragen voor een optimale weergave in de doeltaal. Ook de literaire kwaliteiten van de brontekst zullen in een goede vertaling ‘overgezet’ worden. Je ziet, ik ben het van harte eens met de idealen en de doelstellingen van de NBV: brontekstgetrouw én doeltaalgericht.

Een Nederlandse bijbelvertaling die wél brontekstgetrouw is maar geen werkelijke aandacht besteedt aan de eisen van het Nederlands, is in mijn ogen alsnog mislukt. Volgens mij laat je de lezer dan echt in de kou staan. Het lijkt me een misvatting dat het bij de Bijbel alleen maar om ‘de boodschap’ zou gaan, en dat de manier waarop die boodschap vorm heeft gekregen in die veelheid aan teksten er niet wezenlijk toe doet.

Wat betekent ‘goed Nederlands’ dan in de praktijk in de NBV21?

Verderop geef ik wat voorbeelden van verbeteringen in verschillende prozateksten. Laat ik nu iets noemen uit een van de poëtische bijbelboeken. Het subtiele spel met taal dat eigen is aan poëzie, de werking van klank en ritme – zulke aspecten moeten in een goede vertaling overgebracht worden. Als je bijvoorbeeld een psalm zou vertalen door de betekenis in expliciete prozazinnen te formuleren, zou dat respectloos zijn en mishandeling van het origineel.

Wij hebben gemerkt dat de poëtische kracht van de NBV in het bijbelboek Job beter uitkomt als we met behulp van witregels strofen zouden onderscheiden. De NBV heeft ook wel wat witregels, maar er zijn verschillende hoofdstukken die als één lange poëzietekst worden gepresenteerd. Zo is bijvoorbeeld Job 12-14 één geheel, met één witregel na Job 14:12. Dat is voor de lezer een enorme opgave.

Neem Job 3. Dat hoofdstuk hebben we nu in drie strofen verdeeld: de verzen 3-10, 11-19 en 20-26. De tweede en de derde strofe beginnen in de NBV21 beide met het woord ‘waarom’; die woorden stonden ook al in de NBV, maar vielen toen niet op. In vers 10 hebben we de vertaling als volgt aangepast: ‘Hij opende de deuren van mijn moeders schoot / en hield het onheil niet voor mij verborgen.’ We hebben het woord ‘schoot’ hier niet direct gekozen omdat het poëtischer zou zijn dan ‘buik’, maar omdat het aansluit bij de weergave van dat woord in onder andere Job 1:21. Nu legt het woord ‘schoot’ in het laatste vers van de eerste strofe een mooi verband met het eerste vers van de volgende strofe, dat hetzelfde woord bevat. Ik zie dit soort ingrepen als een manier om de tekst voor de Nederlandse lezer beter te laten werken. Dus ‘goed Nederlands’ is veel meer dan correcte spelling en grammatica.

Een aantal woorden is voor het eerst in de NBV21 te vinden, van ‘uitvreter’ tot ‘snoever’. Hoe kom je tot zo’n keuze?

Dat vind ik eigenlijk een verkeerde vraag. Je doet een tekst geen recht door in te zoomen op losse woorden; dat is hetzelfde als spreken over taal en dan over spelfouten beginnen. Als we constateerden dat wat er in de NBV staat niet optimaal is en we kwamen met elkaar tot een beter, passender voorstel, dan kozen we dát. De vraag of zo’n voorstel een ‘nieuw’ woord bevat, deed niet ter zake. Geen van de vertalers heeft gedacht: laat ik eens een nieuw woord in de vertaling invoeren.

Ik weet wel dat losse woorden – nieuwe woorden, verdwenen woorden – het goed doen in de media. Ik zie dat met lede ogen aan. Voor je het weet beland je in oeverloze discussies over ‘kribbe’ of ‘aalmoes’ of weet ik welk woord. Ik vind dat zo zonde. Het leidt alle aandacht af van waar het om gaat: de tekst. Woorden krijgen kleur en betekenis in hun context, dat geldt zeker voor een vertaling als de NBV.

Begrijp me goed: ik ben gek op woorden en het is heerlijk om ermee te spelen en te zoeken naar het woord dat in een specifieke context het beste past. En als je, soms na lang zoeken, zo’n woord gevonden hebt, kun je je intens tevreden voelen. Niet omdat dat woord op zichzelf zo mooi of nieuw is, maar omdat het hier, op de plek waar je het gebruikt, zijn natuurlijke plaats krijgt.
